My ERASMUS Week

Lithuania 2019

Monday, 21st of October 2019

In our first days in the Erasmus project we got introduced to bubble Maps and double bubble Maps.
This was something new to us, it isn't very common to see this in Portugal. First, to do a bubble map you make the big bubble in the center where the subject is or any specific themes. For example, let´s say, that's the theme is smart phones . So you draw a big bubble in the center where you write smartphones and then you make small bubbles around the big bubble where you put the characteristics of a smartphone like, camera, display,  processor etc.
Now let's talk about double bubble Maps. A double bubble map is something that you use when comparing 2 things.First, you make one double for one thing and then make another bubble for another thing you; right the differences and then write the similarities between them.

So on Tuesday we visited the VGTU- Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, where we had the opportunity to get to know a little bit about de university, about the courses they have, their students and the possibilities and aids to those students who want to study there and  do ERASMUS.
After this, we went to the Municipality of Vilnius City, where we meet the municipality representatives. Here we went to a room with a beautiful  panoramic view to see all the Vilnius city, we alsosawa sculpture made with steel blades, parts of clocks and watch mechanisms named as “Chronos Column”  and also we saw a model of the city with all of its buildings.
After this we went to Trakai, the historical capital of Lithuania. This is where we find Trakai Medieval Castle, this construction had a strategic and defensive functions in the 14th century, during the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, on one of the islands on Lake Galvė. It is the only island castle in all of eastern Europe.
Here we had an activity to do, related with our project. To carry out the activity we were divided into several international groups, with one element from each country. To make the divisionit was given to each country an envelope with parts of a postcard, those parts that we had to put together to form a whole postcard, by piecing together all the pieces of the postcard we were able to find a written word, that word was meant to indicate the theme of a story we had to create using information collected during the visit in this city.
And in the next day our task was to join again the group colleagues and gather all the material collected during the visit and create a story using the story telling method with a computer-comics maker program.

The day had a lot of activities starting with:
  • The debate that we had already started working on Tuesday, we had chosen the theme of it, and for that we had to write three subjects of our choice in a paper, than we were divided in groups of four and between all sixteen topics we had to choose three to go for votes between all the others. The winning theme was “Should the public transport be free of costs?”. After we had a theme, on Wednesday we were ready to debate. For that we were divide in groups of four (two pros and two cons), and then we formed arguments and chose a spokesperson. When everything was prepared, each spokesperson of each side (two of each) went to a separate table with the others to start to reason. Each side had its turn to talk, the time was tracked to be equal to everyone and they were always alternating. At the end of the debate, we came to the conclusion that each side had their fair reasons and everyone did a good job.
  • Before lunch we had the chance to visit Russian drama theatre. We had an amazing guide that is an actor so he was able to give us a more personal visit. Once the presentations were done we followed him to the floor underground where all the backstage started. We saw is dressing room and many more others, as also the costume storage room that had around five thousand, the room were the wigs and makeup were made, the band room and finally we made our way to the stage where we were capable of seeing all the theatre and it’s magnificent design. When we were almost leaving the theatre the guide showed us one mosaic that was famous for being magic, if you put your feet there, spin and think about something that you really want, you just need to things about that once a day for a full year and that thing will come true, for a fact the actor said it had already happen to him.
  • In the afternoon we had a drama workshop where we worked a lot of soft skills as verbal communication, nonverbal communication, presentation, public speaking, reading body language, creativity, thinking outside the box, confidence, collaboration and many more. We developed so many soft skills with activities such: improvising in the stage with a group, that made us not only collaborate with others but also be as expressive as possible, because the others had to understand what we were doing, in addition we had someone that didn’t know what we were doing describing our moves to everyone; another activity was that we had to go to the stage by ourselves and mimic an action following the action that the person before us made. So we ended the day with very relaxing and fun activities.

We started this day by going to Anykščiai where we could learn a little bit about Lithuanian traditions. Between those traditions were the making of the Sour Bread, whichincluded singing songs to the bread and the respect that Lithuanians have to it, and we also got to know the connection that Lithuanians have to horses and all the history behind it, thanks to the visit to the Horse Museum.
After that we had a traditional lunch where we tasted different dishes from their culture, where we can include a ginger drink, some potatoes, beetroot salad, sausages and of course the Sour Bread that we made.
By the end of the afternoon, there were some folk activities -called TautiniaiŠokiai -at the school that were really funny and a good way to spend time with our new friends. The activities/dances were:
  • Groups of four dancing in a circle and switching the pairs;
  • Line of pairs in which we had to listen to the music so we could do the right moves in the right time
  • Two linesin which the person from a line had to hold the hands of the person from the other line in front. Then someone was going to pick other person and cross between the two lines until they achieve the end.
  • A big circle with someone in the middle that would choose someone and go throughtheline of the circle until the music stops, in there the next middle person would be chosen.
  • Another big circle in which we had to cross under two people and going on until we were all in a snail form being unable to move.

The morning of the last day of the project was spent in two main activities:
  • The development of a double bubble map with the differences and similarities between the two countries, ours and Lithuania. This kind of maps is a great way of organizing our thoughts, and at the same time delve into the countries’ cultures.
  • Finally we developed the Projects legacy, the glossary which reunites various words from the subject of Soft Skills that were experienced during the week.
